Richard Caston spent a great deal of time here, over eighteen months. He has spent the time not to impose himself on the Cathedral, but to allow the Cathedral to speak to him and it has spoken to him very powerfully.

In between hospital visits to my mother, I spent time in Norwich Cathedral, a building with over 900 years of history. I was impressed by the new exhibition facilities in The Hostry, which integrated glass and wood construction with the ancient stones. When my mother died in the spring of 2012, I applied to exhibit my work there, as a tribute to both my parents. It was to be a homecoming and my first exhibition in Norwich for years. By the summer of 2012 I had begun the work, at first just drawing in various parts of the building and grounds. Eventually the project became a new departure, not just in terms of the subject matter, but in my methods of working, especially with new materials and techniques.

An entirely new body of work was created and the exhibition Living Stones: Richard Caston’s silent journey, was held at the Cathedral during a stormy February 2014.

Richard Caston verbrachte sehr viel Zeit hier – mehr als 18 Monate. Er nahm sich diese Zeit, weil er sich der Kathedrale nicht aufdrängen, sondern ihr die Möglichkeit geben wollte, zu ihm zu sprechen, und das hat die Kathedrale sehr eindrucksvoll getan.

Zwischen den Besuchen bei meiner Mutter im Krankenhaus verbrachte ich Zeit in der Kathedrale von Norwich, einem Bauwerk mit einer mehr als 900-jährigen Geschichte. Ich war beeindruckt von den neuen Ausstellungsräumen in The Hostry, die Glas und Holz mit antiken Steinen integriert haben. Als meine Mutter im Frühjahr 2012 verstarb, bat ich darum, meine Arbeiten dort als Reminiszenz an meine Eltern ausstellen zu dürfen. Es war eine Art Heimkehr und meine erste Ausstellung in Norwich seit Jahren. Ich begann im Sommer 2012 mit den Arbeiten und zeichnete zunächst einfach nur in verschiedenen Bereichen des Gebäudes und des Grundstücks. Letztendlich entwickelte sich dieses Projekt zu einem Neuanfang – nicht nur im Hinblick auf das Motiv, sondern auch auf meine Arbeitsweise und insbesondere in Bezug auf neue Materialien und Techniken.

Völlig neue Werke entstanden und die Ausstellung Living Stones: Richard Caston’s silent journey fand im stürmischen Februar des Jahres 2014 in der Kathedrale statt.
