A Walk in the Park

“A Walk in the Park” usually refers to something easy, not requiring too much effort, like a “doddle” or “a piece of cake”.

I used this term once for my students at the start of the of the new school year, when taking the class to the Hofgarten in Düsseldorf for a walk in the park. It turned out to be quite challenging with a number of unusual drawing tasks, such as the “walking drawing” made while in motion. The idea was for us to become awake and to see freshly through novelty and at the same time, I remember, try to avoid an accident with the bikers and joggers along the paths.

A walk in the Hofgarten takes one through history, politics, ecology, city planning and dendrology, the study of trees. The Hofgarten trees, carefully selected and planted to create a variety of environments, both formal gardens and in the “English” section, created a park landscape. The Hofgarten is Germany’s first and oldest public park, an oasis of calm in the city.

I began the painting “A Walk in the Park” after that first drawing session with my students. Working through drawings made on site at the Reitallee, a pathway for riding, I constructed the four canvases in the school studio, as part of my “creative example” approach to teaching. I began the work there and continued after a year in my own studio on what was at that time my largest painting.

When finally it was completed in 2014, disaster affected the whole region as Hurricane Ela struck the city. It cost some lives, damaged buildings and property and it destroyed tens of thousands of trees. The trees shown on the right section of my painting disappeared and the remaining wooded area was thinned considerably. The painting records the last days of the Reitallee, before the hurricane. Replanting trees throughout the city began in the following months and years and was completed at the Reitallee in 2019.

Die Mehrheit der Weltbevölkerung lebt heute in Städten.  Im Westen hat sich seit dem Beginn der industriellen Revolution  unsere Beziehung zur Landschaft  drastisch geändert, da die meisten von uns nicht mehr direkt vom Land abhängig sind, um zu überleben.  Außer im Urlaub oder bei Abenteuerreisen in die Natur, ist der größte Teil, den wir von der Landschaft sehen, künstlich, und durch Jahre der Landwirtschaft geprägt.  Wenn man mit dem Auto oder der Bahn unterwegs ist, die Landschaft scheint am wenigsten interessante Teil zu sein.

Die Landschaftsmalerei genießt seit kurzem erneutes Interesse, was vielleicht mit unserem Denken über Ökologie und Urbanisierung und mit unserem Verlangen, wieder mehr mit der Natur verbunden zu sein, zusammenhängt.

Bewusst oder unbewusst nehmen Künstler dieses Verlangen wahr.  Landschaftsmalerei ist nicht unbedingt Teil der grünen Ökologiebewegung, aber könnte als Thema in der Malerei ein Wiedererwachen haben, von etwas, das in Vergessenheit geraten ist.  Für den Maler ist es dann eine große Herausforderung, das Thema, die Landschaft zu “re-kreieren”, während er zur gleichen Zeit eine alte Erinnerung wachruft.

Als Kind waren meine Schlafzimmerwände mit Drucken von Van Goghs Gemälden und von den der Impressionisten bedeckt, und schon ab neun Jahren malte ich die Vögel und Landschaften in der Nähe unseres Hauses in Norwich (GB).  Dann entdeckte ich im dortigen Museum die Landschaftsbilder von John Crome und John Sell Cotman (“Norwich School”).  Alle diese Werke sind Bezugspunkte und Grundlage für meine eigene Malerei geworden.

Während meines Kunststudiums musste ich meine Faszination für die aus der Mode geratenen romantischen Gemälden beiseite legen.  In den späten 60er Jahren mit mehreren Reisen zu den Archäologischen Stätten von Stonehenge und Avebury, kehrte ich sozusagen “zum Land” zurück.  Dort war das Gefühl einer lebendigen Landschaft sehr intensiv – es war ein Gefühl, dass die Erde unter meinen Füßen voller Leben war.

Durch mein Arbeiten in der Natur erwachte langsam das Bewusstsein von der Schnittstelle zwischen der Aussenwelt und den Interpretationen, die mein Gehirn erstellte – meiner inneren Welt.  
 
Durch meine Sinneswahrnehmungen, insbesondere beim Zeichnen oder Malen, war ich im Einklang mit der gesamten Landschaft wie in einem kontinuierlichen Energiefeld.  Es war wie eine Spiegel meiner Stimmungen.  Es fokussierte mein Selbstgefühl und mein erweitertes Bewusstsein; manchmal führte es zu einem Gefühl der Freude und Begeisterung, am Leben zu sein. 

Als ich dann in den 70er Jahren in Düsseldorf ankam, war ich schon ein Landschaftsmaler und war in fast direktem Gegensatz zu dem Neo-Expressionismus, der zu der Zeit tobte.  Um diese Isolation zu überleben, habe ich mich von den Reichtum der Kunstgeschichte inspirieren lassen und habe ständig die großen Meister der Vergangenheit, darunter Caspar David Friedrich, Jacob van Ruisdael und John Constable als Referenzen genommen.  Diese Künstler waren meine Lehrer, zusammen mit zeitgenössischen Malern wie David Hockney und John Wonnacott.

Landschaftsmalerei erinnert uns an die Zerbrechlichkeit des Lebens auf der Erde und an unsere Rolle in der Natur in dieser kritischen Periode unserer Geschichte.
Durch gemalten Nuancen immer wechselnden Lichts wird ein Geist des Ortes aufgerufen, und die Landschaftsmalerei kann sowohl Erinnerungen an die Erkundungen unserer Kindheit wachrufen als auch einen Sinn für die Wunder der natürlichen Welt wecken.

In der Landschaft ist die Natur schon sublim.  Gleichwohl setzt Landschaftsmalerei auf die Stärke ihres kompositorischen Aufbaus, auf die geschickte Anwendung des Künstlers von Farbe und auf die Vision ihrer Größe. 
Der Betrachter ist eingeladen, allein in die Malerei einzutreten.  

Auf diese Weise tritt er oder sie mit dem  Künstler in Kontakt und kann so etwas Vertrautes, was mit anderen Augen gesehen wurde, gemeinsam erleben.  So gelingt es, dass man Van Ruisdaels niederländische Wolken und  Constables Ostenglische Landschaften wiedererkennen kann.  Das ist auch der Grund, warum Landschaftsmalerei aus der Vergangenheit uns noch immer berührt.

Diese Landschaften, Bäume und Himmel sind nicht nur Metapher für die Kraft der Natur und für die Lebenskraft, sondern sie erinnern uns an den Wert der direkten Erfahrung.  Sie sind Ausdruck von existentiellem Sinn, ohne von intellektueller Schwere belastet zu sein.  Sie vermitteln eine Schlichtheit und Intimität, die durch intensive Beobachtung und durch wiederholte Besuche, Tag für Tag, an die gleichen Bäume, auf dem gleichen Weg, entstanden sind.  

Der Duft von feuchter Erde und das Geräusch des Windes, das Gefühl von Regen oder der Anblick von Sonnenstrahlen, die durch die Wolken brechen: das ist, wie es ist.

It is only in the last years that the majority of the world’s population lives in cities. In the West, our relationship with landscape has changed drastically since the start of the industrial revolution, as most of us are now not directly dependent on the land for our survival. Apart from our holidays or adventure travels into nature, most of the landscape we see is manmade, formed through years of agriculture. When travelling by car or rail, the landscape seems often to be the least interesting part of the journey.

Landscape painting has recently enjoyed renewed interest, reflecting perhaps our concerns with ecology and urbanization, and our desire to become reconnected. Artists may be responding to these concerns and while not necessarily part of the green ecology movement, the landscape, as subject matter in painting, can be seen a reawakening of something we have forgotten. The challenge for the painter, is to make the subject come alive, to find an image that is new and contemporary, while at the same time, provokes an ancient memory.

As a child, my bedroom walls were covered by prints of Van Gogh’s paintings and the Impressionists, and from the age of nine I painted the birds and landscapes near our home in Norwich. I then discovered the landscape paintings from the “Norwich School” by John Crome and John Sell Cotman, at the local museum. All these works were to become my painting foundation and point of reference.

While I had to put aside my fascination with unfashionable romantic paintings during my art studies, I returned to the land, as it were, in the late 1960s with several trips to the archeological sites of Stonehenge and Avebury. There the feeling of a living landscape was most intense; a sense that the earth was alive under my feet.

I became aware through working in nature, of the interface between the world out there and the interpretations my brain created, my inner world. Through my sense perceptions, especially while drawing or painting, I could feel at one with the entire landscape, like a continuous field of energy. It mirrored my moods and gave focus to my sense of self and expanded awareness; at times it resulted in a feeling of joy and elation at being alive.

By the time I arrived in Düsseldorf in the1970s, I was already painting landscapes, in almost direct contrast to the neo-expressionism that was raging at the time. To survive this artistic isolation, I relied on the wealth of art history and constantly referred to the great masters of the past, including Caspar David Friedrich, Jacob van Ruisdael and John Constable. These artists were my teachers, together with contemporary painters, such as David Hockney and John Wonnacott.

Landscape painting reminds us of the fragility of life on earth and our role in nature at this critical period of our history. Through its painted nuances of changing light to capture a spirit of place, landscape painting can evoke memories of the explorations of our childhood, our sense of wonder of the natural world.

As nature in landscape is already sublime, landscape painting relies on the strength of its compositional construction, the expression of the artist’s skillful application of paint and colour, and the vision of its scope. The viewer is invited to enter alone into the painting. In this way he or she is brought into communication with the artist, able to share something familiar seen through different eyes. This is why we can recognise Van Ruisdael’s clouds in the Netherlands and Constable’s trees in the East Anglian countryside, and why landscape painting from the past can still touch us.

These landscapes, trees and skies are not just metaphors for the power of nature or the life force, but are reminders of the value of direct experience. They express existential meaning without being burdened by intellectual baggage. They convey a simplicity and intimacy found by intense observation and by repeated visits, day by day, to the same trees, along the same path.
The fragrance of damp earth, and the sound of the wind, the feel of rain or the sight of sunshine breaking through the clouds; this is how it is.
